I have a 03 Duramax 4x4 and blue smoke comes out of the tailpipe at idle or low speed. When adding coolant while the truck was running, I noticed it leaking slowly down into my wheel well. It also only leaks the antifreeze at random one day she let it idle and the temp gauge was only around 160 and it just dumped a good bit of coolant. Recently the coolant started dissapearing very fast with no visable leaks any where. the oring only keeps debris out, mine had probably been leaking a long time but the oring had deteriated and made the leak external, unfortunately you are looking at a new head. Usually, external leaks in that area stems from a hose or the quick connect fitting (item 3 and 1 below). you can do it with out pulling the cooler but you run a high risk of folding the new thick rubber o-ring over out of its groove when you slide it back in.
